Native Australian Lacewing Life Cycle Kit – Watch Complete Metamorphosis in Your Classroom

Discover one of nature's most fascinating beneficial insects with the BugShop Native Australian Lacewing Life Cycle Kit. This engaging classroom resource allows students to observe the complete life cycle of a lacewing, from tiny eggs through to active larvae, pupae and delicate adult insects.

Perfect for schools, homeschoolers and curious young entomologists, this kit provides a unique opportunity to investigate insect development, adaptations and biological pest control through hands-on scientific observation. It aligns with the Australian Curriculum by supporting investigations into living things, life cycles, ecosystems and the interactions between organisms and their environment.

What's Included?

  • Live native Australian lacewing eggs

  • Clear, reusable observation enclosure

  • Lacewing food

  • Complete care instructions

  • Ideas for classroom investigations and activities

Curriculum Integration

  • Foundation – Year 2: Observe living things as they grow and change and investigate their basic needs.

  • Year 3 – 4: Explore complete life cycles, insect anatomy and the relationship between organisms and their environment.

  • Year 5 – 6: Investigate adaptations, food webs, biological pest control and the role of beneficial insects in sustainable ecosystems.

What to Expect

Lacewings undergo complete metamorphosis, transforming through four remarkable life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Over approximately 3–4 weeks (depending on temperature), students can observe each stage of development and witness one of nature's most incredible insect transformations.

The tiny eggs hatch into active larvae, often called "aphid lions" because of their voracious appetite for aphids and other soft-bodied garden pests. These fierce little predators hunt using large curved jaws, making them one of the most effective natural pest controllers found in Australian gardens.

As the larvae grow, they spin a silken cocoon and enter the pupal stage before emerging as beautiful green adult lacewings with delicate transparent wings. Adult lacewings are gentle insects that feed on nectar, pollen and honeydew, contributing to healthy garden ecosystems.

Throughout the life cycle, students can observe changes in body structure, behaviour and feeding habits while learning how lacewings contribute to sustainable agriculture by naturally reducing pest populations. A single lacewing larva can consume hundreds of aphids during its development, making these insects an important part of our ecosystem.

The reusable observation enclosure makes it easy to monitor development each day, record scientific observations and compare the different stages of complete metamorphosis. Students can keep journals, measure growth, investigate insect anatomy and discuss the role of predators in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Encourage curiosity, scientific thinking and environmental stewardship with this engaging classroom resource. Each kit includes complete care instructions and ideas for interactive classroom activities to support inquiry-based learning.
