Antlion Life Cycle Kit
Antlion Life Cycle Kit – Meet One of Nature’s Most Fascinating Tiny Predators
Discover what’s hiding beneath the sand with the BugShop Antlion Life Cycle Kit!
Antlions are incredible insect predators famous for constructing funnel-shaped traps in sandy soil. Hidden beneath the surface, the antlion larva waits with only its powerful jaws exposed, ready to ambush tiny insects that tumble into its pit.
This hands-on kit gives students the opportunity to care for and observe 3 live antlion larvae, investigate their unusual hunting behaviour and discover the incredible adaptations that help them survive.
Perfect for primary and secondary classrooms, homeschoolers and curious young entomologists, the Antlion Life Cycle Kit turns insect behaviour, adaptations and life cycles into a fascinating living science investigation.
What’s Included?
-
3 live antlion larvae
-
Reusable observation enclosure
-
Sandy substrate suitable for pit building
-
Complete care instructions
-
Classroom investigation and activity ideas
- You will need to catch your own ants to feed the antlions (but that's all part of the fun!)
Curriculum Integration
-
Kindergarten – Year 2: Observe the needs, features and behaviours of living things.
-
Year 3 – 4: Investigate life cycles and how animals use their environment to survive.
-
Year 5 – 6: Explore structural and behavioural adaptations, habitats, food chains and predator-prey relationships.
-
Years 7–10: Investigate ecosystems, adaptations, interactions between organisms, experimental design and animal behaviour.
What to Expect
Once placed into the supplied sandy substrate, your antlion larvae can begin creating their characteristic funnel-shaped pit traps.
Using backwards movements and their bodies to flick sand, the larvae excavate pits in loose substrate. They then bury themselves at the bottom, leaving their impressive jaws ready to capture prey.
This behaviour provides an amazing opportunity for students to observe a real predator-prey strategy in action.
Students can investigate questions such as:
-
How does an antlion build its pit?
-
How long does pit construction take?
-
Do all three antlions build pits of the same size?
-
Does sand depth affect pit size?
-
How do antlions detect prey?
-
Why is the shape of the pit important?
-
What adaptations make an antlion such an effective predator?
Students can measure pits, photograph changes, record behaviour and collect data throughout their investigation.
An Incredible Life Cycle
Antlions undergo complete metamorphosis through four stages:
Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult
The antlion spends much of its life as a larva, living in sandy environments and hunting small insects.
When it is ready to transform, the larva creates a protective cocoon using silk and grains of sand. Inside, it undergoes metamorphosis before emerging as a delicate winged adult antlion.
The adult looks completely different from the fierce larva. With a long, slender body and two pairs of wings, adult antlions can look a little like dragonflies or damselflies at first glance.
Depending on temperature, food availability and environmental conditions, the larval stage can last for many months and sometimes considerably longer, making antlions fascinating insects to observe over time.
Perfect for Classroom Investigations
The Antlion Life Cycle Kit isn't just something to look at. It provides opportunities for genuine inquiry-based science.
Students can make predictions, design experiments, measure pit dimensions, compare individual antlions, collect data and investigate how environmental conditions influence behaviour.
It’s a fantastic living classroom resource for exploring:
-
Insect life cycles
-
Animal behaviour
-
Structural and behavioural adaptations
-
Predator-prey relationships
-
Habitats and ecosystems
-
Scientific observation
-
Experimental design and data collection
From an almost invisible predator hiding beneath the sand to a delicate winged adult, antlions demonstrate just how extraordinary insect life cycles can be.
