What to Expect

Slime moulds are among the most fascinating organisms on Earth. Although they consist of a single giant cell containing thousands of nuclei, they are capable of surprisingly complex behaviours. They can detect food, avoid hazards, solve simple mazes and continually change shape as they explore their environment.

Over the course of 1–3 weeks, students can observe the slime mould as it grows across its food source, extending networks of bright yellow veins that transport nutrients throughout the organism. As food becomes scarce, the slime mould reorganises its network, finding the most efficient pathways between food sources in a remarkable demonstration of biological optimisation.

Because slime moulds respond rapidly to changes in moisture, light, temperature and food availability, they provide an excellent opportunity for students to design their own scientific investigations. Students can test environmental variables, make predictions, collect data and compare experimental results using real living organisms.
