BugShop Lacewing Life Cycle Kit

Turn your classroom or home into a living laboratory with the BugShop Lacewing Life Cycle Kit,  a complete, hands-on experience that lets students observe one of nature’s most efficient and fascinating beneficial insects from egg to adult.

Inside the kit you’ll receive everything needed to begin the journey:

  • Live lacewing eggs

  • A reusable observation enclosure

  • Lacewing Food

  • Simple care and observation guide

From the moment the tiny eggs arrive, students can witness real insect development in action. Over the next 3–4 weeks (depending on temperature and conditions), the lacewings progress through their complete life cycle: egg → larva → pupa → adult. Each stage reveals dramatically different behaviours and adaptations, making it an ideal long-term science investigation.

The larvae, often called “aphid lions,” are especially fascinating. They are active predators with impressive hunting behaviour, using their sharp mandibles to capture aphids and other soft-bodied insects. As they grow, they become powerful natural pest controllers before entering the pupal stage, where they transform into delicate green adult lacewings with finely veined, transparent wings.

Adult lacewings are gentle, nocturnal insects known for their fluttery, almost fragile flight and their attraction to light. While the larvae are fierce hunters, adults primarily feed on nectar, pollen, and honeydew, helping support pollination and ecosystem balance.

Lacewings play a vital role in the environment as natural biological control agents, reducing the need for chemical pesticides in gardens and farms. A single lacewing larva can consume hundreds of aphids during its development, making them incredibly valuable allies in sustainable agriculture and home gardening.

This kit is ideal for classrooms because it:

  • Demonstrates complete metamorphosis in real time

  • Encourages scientific observation and data recording

  • Introduces concepts of food webs and biological control

  • Engages students with living, changing organisms over several weeks

The BugShop Lacewing Life Cycle Kit brings science to life, transforming abstract curriculum concepts into a dynamic, unforgettable experience where students don’t just learn about ecosystems… they watch one grow.
